  1. When you start the media wizard, please choose the following options:

    - Boot Boot Media, and check "For use with WDS"

    - Next

    - Select Platform Pack

    - Next

    - Browse to answer file

    - Next

    - Select CD/DVD Disc

    - Next

    - Select ISO save path

    - Next

    - Finish

    When the wizard completes a .wim will be located where you specified the ISO save path in the steps above. Import that wim in your Boot Images section of your WDS server. Once you network boot to your boot image, your answer file should be used.

    Thanks,

  2. Hello,

    There is no way to force SmartDeploy to instantly recognize the answer as it already should be. It seems like it may be possible that the USB drivers are still initializing and perhaps that's why the wait is needed? Have you tried other USB ports? Perhaps another USB stick to see if it's an issue with the actual USB?

    Thanks,

  3. Hello,

    Once you receive the error, please return to the SmartPE splash screen and hit Shift-F10 to bring up a command prompt. Then browse to X:\Windows\Temp\Deploy.log and send that log to support@smartdeploy.com and we can investigate the issue further. Do you have access to a USB that could hold the image? We would recommend deploying via USB over spanned DVDs anyway, as usually just Windows 7 Sp1 and a few programs will be too big for a DVD.

    Thanks,

  4. Hi Mark,

    Glad you're enjoying the product! The platform packs do not increase the size of your image, as they are separate from the image. When you deploy using a pack, the drivers that are used are copied to the C:\Platform folder of the target machine, which can take up some space, but normally not much, and you can always delete the folder afterwards.

    To estimate the amount of space C:\Platform will take on your target machine, you could extract the OS node that you would be using and check the properties. Just to clarify, C:\Platform only contains the drivers from the manufacturer/model/OS you used to deploy, so if you have a bunch of other models in there, those wouldn't be copied over.

    Thanks,

  5. Hi Arvindh,

    Just to clarify, you deploy just fine, but when you attempt to deploy again, the deployment wizard freezes? Same steps I assume?

    Are you a able to close the deploywizard after it freezes and return to the splash screen? If so, please hit Shift-F10 on the splash screen to bring up a command prompt, and send us the following log:

    X:\Windows\Temp\Deploy.log

    If you cannot return to the splash screen after the freeze, perhaps you could try loading the command prompt before attempting to re-create the deploy wizard freeze, then reproduce the freeze and still have access to the command prompt.

    Thanks,

  6. Hello,

    Thanks for taking the time to evaluate SmartDeploy.

    Please check for the following keys in regedit and remove them if they exist. Also, please ensure no snapshots have been created on the VM.

    • SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{FE2F6A2C-196E-4210-9C04-2B1BC21F07EF}
    • SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\VMTools
    • SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\VMwareTools
    • SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{96B74176-0BA4-4F5D-B3A5-466EAD9E73BD}

    Thanks,

  7. Hi Jwillis,

    You're correct, if the multi-cast groupname is not available, the workflow will not "fallback" to using a similar named image. You must use the Z:\Images\[multi-casting groupname]\reminst\[image name] format. If you haven't already, you can read more about the integration of SmartDeploy with WDS here: http://smartdeploy.com/docs/default-source/download/smartdeploy-with-windows-deployment-services

  8. Hi Andrew,

    Please perform the following to use your answer file.

    Steps To Export your answer file

    • Boot to SmartPE
    • Proceed through the wizard while customizing your deployment settings
    • Proceed to the summary page and click export
    • When asked "Is the answer file for use in an unattended installation" select no.
    • Export your answer file

    Steps to change your answer file to stop on the Network Identification page (So you can change the computer name)

    You can set the skip value for each page in your answer file.

    Skip value: 0 = Do not skip

    Skip value: 1 = Skip

    Since you want the DeployWizard to stop on the network identification page. you would enter a skip value of 1 to every page you didn't want the user to see and keep a skip value of 0 on the network identification page. For example for the network identification page you would change the following:

    <network_identification skip="0">
    <computer_name />
    <!-- 0 = Domain, 1 = Workgroup -->
    <membership>1</membership>
    <domain />
    <domain_options>
    <option></option>
    </domain_options>
    <organizational_unit />
    <organizational_unit_options>
    <option></option>
    </organizational_unit_options>
    <workgroup>WORKGROUP</workgroup>
    </network_identification>

    Remember to set the skip value of 1 for the other pages in the answer file, that way the only page that is displayed is the Network identification page so you can change the name of the machine.

    Steps to use answer file:

    • Start Media Wizard
    • Proceed to the Optional Components page
    • Browse to your answer file and select the answer file you exported in the steps above
    • Finish the media wizard
    • Boot to newly created media

    Now when you click on "Deploy an image" it should automatically proceed to the network identification page.

    Thanks,

    SmartDeploy Support

  9. Hello,

    You will not need to specify which drivers you will need. You will only need to select the platform pack that is created for the model of computer you're attempting to deploy too. SmartDeploy detects the computer manufacturer, model and OS you're attempting to deploy too via the computer's WMI. You can read more about the platform pack technology here: http://smartdeploy.com/technology/platformpacks
