barry.weiss@moore.org
Hi there, if you'll recall, when Windows 10 Anniversary update (1607) came out, the VM reference image had to be rebuilt from scratch. In other words, we could not upgrade our existing image to 1607. Do you know with the upcoming Windows 10 Creators update, if that will be the case again where the reference image will have to be rebuilt from scratch or will we be able to upgrade the reference image to the Creators update and be able to use that with Smart Deploy? Thanks for any info you can provide. -Barry
SmartDeploySupport
Microsoft moved away from Service Packs, and starting offering major updates as in-place upgrades. Windows Update makes these happen pretty seamlessly, but what is actually happening behind the scenes is that the data and settings are getting backed up in-place via USMT, then the existing OS is upgraded, then the data and settings are restored. This obviously isn’t the cleanest way to create an image that you are then going to mass deploy. So, it’s always a good idea to start over and create a new VM when these major version updates come out. It used to be that Sysprep would not run on an upgraded OS. But, starting with Windows 10 1607 Microsoft updated Sysprep to allow it to run. SmartDeploy 2.0.2020 will allow Sysprep to run if it’s 1607. If you do capture an upgraded OS, might want to run disk cleanup and get rid of the previous OS before capturing. Thanks, SmartDeploy Support
